EMERGENCIES

One last thing. If you live alone, make sure to check in with your emergency contact person upon return. If you are a smart phone or tablet user consider downloading Bugle from the iTunes Store. This free app is configured to automatically notify your emergency contacts of your whereabouts if you do not check in with Bugle that you have returned.

It is almost always a good idea to provide loved ones and other interested individuals with selected trip data about your upcoming wilderness trip. This data will be useful to search and rescue personnel in case of emergencies. Providing more extensive trip data is especially important if the trip involves one or more of the following:

  • traveling solo
  • exploring new and difficult terrain
  • planned itinerary in more familiar terrain involves unusual trails, routes, etc.
  • more than a day or two distance from the trailhead
  • backpacking trips in the winter

The data form that I currently use can be downloaded as follows.
